Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection is advisable for most people depending on the everyday driving activities of the person involved. When you have other responsibilities, especially of a financial nature then this is no longer an option. For people with families it is better they try to incorporate personal injury protection or Pip into an existing health insurance plan if it will allow. While this is obviously a good idea, the average family will decide the merits of this first against the overall cost of their current insurance commitments.

It is often the case that it was arranged without the full range of cover looked at so may be inappropriate to the needs of the customer. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. This disparity is highlighted when you consider that a driver in the state of Florida will only require one tenth the amount of protection that a driver will need if he is in the state of Alaska. Even if personal injury protection is not obligatory in your state, you may still want to consider purchasing a policy anyway.

A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. These costs include medical bills, lost wages and other assorted expenses because it is termed a ‘no-fault policy', so it covers you and your passengers, even if the fault was yours. This is a good reason why it is worth checking existing insurance plans to see if any of these areas are already protected, which should, in theory, lower any additional plan you take out. It is quite common for certain aspects like hospital bills and possibly a percentage of lost income to be covered by a family health insurance policy.

If you were to discover this it may only be necessary to take out a minimal cover personal injury policy and possibly not require one at all. An additional factor to consider is the driving ability and record of the policy holder because this will not only dictate the need for personal injury protection but can affect the overall cost. If you carry passengers on a regular basis your health insurance might cover your own medical expenses, it won't however, cover those of your passengers (unless they are members of your family who are on your health plan). So if your personal injury protection policy does not cover your passengers, it is your responsibility to ensure they are protected.

After all, it is the driver who is liable for the safety and protection of his or her passengers. Those who feel fortunate that their state does not require personal injury protection by law should still have one in place to cover for the eventuality of a serious accident. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need minimal injury insurance. On the other hand, when you are young and just starting out and probably don't have much in the way of health and liability insurance, you will want to protect yourself, your family and your future by carrying as much insurance as you can afford.
